Here are the weekend dates, the leave days that can stretch your break to four or five days, and practical options for a city stay, countryside escape or local day out.

Is the May Bank Holiday the Same in Northern Ireland?

Yes, for this one. Northern Ireland’s early May bank holiday is also Monday, May 3, 2027, so a trip across the border keeps the same long weekend. The difference comes at the end of the month: Northern Ireland has a Spring bank holiday on Monday, May 31, 2027, which isn’t a public holiday in the Republic.

How To Extend the May Bank Holiday Weekend

Comparison of three, four and five consecutive days off in 2027, showing the dates and annual leave needed for each option.

One day of annual leave gives you four consecutive days off; two leave days give you five. That assumes you normally work Monday through Friday, have weekends off and get Monday, May 3 off for the public holiday.

BreakDates Off in 2027Annual Leave Needed
Three daysSaturday, May 1–Monday, May 3None
Four days, starting FridayFriday, April 30–Monday, May 3Friday, April 30
Four days, ending TuesdaySaturday, May 1–Tuesday, May 4Tuesday, May 4
Five daysFriday, April 30–Tuesday, May 4Friday, April 30 and Tuesday, May 4

Take Friday if you want an earlier departure or a full day to reach your base. Tuesday gives you a later return, or a day at home before work starts again. Either way, get leave approved before paying for nonrefundable bookings. A booking confirmation isn’t quite the same as permission to disappear.

Ways To Spend the May Bank Holiday in Ireland

Start with how long you’re willing to spend getting there. Three days can go quickly when a long outward journey and an equally long return take a sizeable bite out of the break.

Dublin: A City Break With a Heritage Stop

Dublin is a decent shout for a weekend built around a few planned visits, meals and time to wander. Use the Dublin Castle visitor guide to decide if the castle deserves one of your main slots, then check its arrangements for your chosen date. Staying all three days? Our three-day Dublin itinerary covers what to see and what to book first.

Want some time outside the city too? The Dublin and Wicklow long-weekend plan is a useful starting point. Check each transfer before committing to both areas, though. Changing bases can eat into an already short break.

Connemara or Clare: Coast and Countryside

A countryside or coastal base makes sense if you want walking, scenery and fewer scheduled stops. The Connemara and Cliffs of Moher itinerary has ideas for both areas. For three days, pick one base unless your journey and transport arrangements leave enough time for both; our guide to exploring Ireland from one base can help you keep day trips manageable.

Taking Friday or Tuesday off gives a longer journey more breathing room. Use our guide to weather in Ireland in May for general planning, keep an indoor option handy and check the forecast close to departure. The calendar settles the date. The weather keeps its options open.

A Local Day Out: Less Travel, No Overnight Booking

A nearby heritage site, town visit or countryside walk can make good use of Monday without an accommodation bill. Pick one main outing, check access and parking or public transport, and leave a bit of space around it. There’s no obligation to turn a day off into a logistics exercise.

No car? Several day trips from Dublin by train fit into a single Monday. Check the timetable for May 3 itself, though, as services can differ on a public holiday.

What To Check Before Booking Your May Break

May bank holiday 2027 Ireland checklist: leave, transport, accommodation, attractions, outdoor plans and family arrangements to check before booking.
  • Your leave: get annual leave approved before you book, and ask your employer by Monday, April 12, 2027 which public holiday benefit you’ll get.
  • Transport: check services for your exact travel dates, including the final return bus or train and any connecting journey.
  • Accommodation: compare the full stay cost, cancellation terms, parking and distance to your planned stops.
  • Attractions: confirm date-specific opening hours, timed tickets and accessibility arrangements directly with the venue.
  • Outdoor plans: check route conditions and the local forecast before setting out.
  • Family arrangements: use our school holidays guide to compare the wider dates, but check your school’s own calendar before adding Friday or Tuesday to the break.

Does Everyone Get the May Bank Holiday Off?

A public holiday doesn’t guarantee that every employee has Monday off. The public holiday benefit can take four forms: a paid day off on the holiday, a paid day off within a month, an additional day of annual leave or an additional day’s pay. Your employer determines which benefit applies.

Full-time workers have immediate entitlement to a public holiday benefit. Part-time workers qualify after working 40 hours in the previous five weeks. Check your roster and benefit with your employer before counting May 3 as a travel day.

Not sure which one you’ll get? Citizens Information says you can ask your employer at least 21 days before the holiday, so by Monday, April 12, 2027 for this one. If they haven’t answered at least 14 days beforehand (by Monday, April 19), you’re entitled to take Monday, May 3 as a paid day off. Our guide to public holiday pay and weekend rules covers the rest.

Why Is There a May Bank Holiday in Ireland?

It’s one of the newer dates on the calendar. The May public holiday was introduced in 1994, so it hasn’t been around as long as St. Patrick’s Day or the August bank holiday. It lands beside May Day, International Workers’ Day on May 1, and close to the old Gaelic festival of Bealtaine, which marked the start of summer. Bealtaine is still the Irish word for May.

The Irish Congress of Trade Unions marked the May Day weekend on X with a reminder of how late Ireland came to it:
