The potential three-day break runs Saturday 5–Monday 7 June 2027. If you normally have weekends off and your employer gives you the public holiday off on Monday, you can put those three days together without using annual leave.

Why Is the Holiday on 7 June?

Irish law designates the first Monday in June as a public holiday. In 2027, that Monday is 7 June. It’s the weekday rule that sets the date each year.

It wasn’t always that way. The Holidays (Employees) Act 1939 listed Whit Monday instead, which moved around with Easter, and a 1973 change replaced it with the first Monday in June. Handy, then, that it now stays put.

Does Everyone Get a Three-Day Weekend?

A public holiday doesn’t automatically mean Monday off. Your working pattern and the public holiday benefit your employer provides determine whether you can take the whole weekend away.

The Workplace Relations Commission lists four forms of public holiday benefit, with the employer determining which applies:

  • A paid day off on the public holiday.
  • A paid day off within a month of the holiday.
  • An additional day of annual leave.
  • An additional day’s pay.

Full-time workers have immediate entitlement to public holiday benefit. Part-time workers qualify when they’ve worked 40 hours in the previous five weeks. Eligible employees who work on the holiday receive their agreed pay for the work as well as their public holiday benefit.

Not sure which benefit you’ll get? Citizens Information says you can ask your employer at least 21 days before the holiday, which means by Monday 17 May 2027. If they haven’t replied at least 14 days beforehand (by Monday 24 May), you’re entitled to take Monday 7 June as a paid day off.

Before paying for a non-refundable stay, confirm your roster and how your employer will provide the benefit; our guide to public holiday entitlements explains the rules in more detail. A booking confirmation is a slightly awkward way to begin a conversation about Monday’s shift.

How To Spend the June Bank Holiday Weekend

Decide what sort of break you want before choosing accommodation. A nearby day out keeps things simple; an overnight stay makes more sense when it gives you useful time at your destination, rather than just somewhere else to unpack.

Type of BreakWho It SuitsDay Trip or Overnight?Main Check
Coastal getawayWalks, beach time and a slower paceDay trip nearby; overnight for a longer journeyLocal access, weather and return transport
City breakCulture, meals out and indoor optionsEither, depending on travel timeAccommodation location and attraction bookings
Family day outOne main activity with less packingUsually easiest as a day tripAge suitability, facilities and entry arrangements

A Coastal Getaway With a Flexible Plan

A coastal break is a decent shout if you want a walk, some time by the sea and an afternoon without much planned. Pick one base and keep the driving modest. Changing accommodation halfway through a short weekend can eat into the time you wanted away.

Need somewhere to aim for? Our pick of the most scenic seaside towns in Ireland is a good place to start.

Use the guide to weather in Ireland in June to help with packing, then check the forecast close to departure. Keep an indoor alternative in mind, and confirm any boat departure or coastal attraction directly with its operator before setting out.

A Dublin City Break With One Main Booking

Dublin works if you want to build the weekend around cultural stops and meals out. Use our three-day Dublin itinerary to plan your route, then choose accommodation near the places you want to visit. Compare the total cost with a day trip, including transport and parking where relevant.

For a heritage stop, the Dublin Castle visitor guide explains what you can see and helps you decide if it fits your plans. Check the venue’s official booking information for your chosen date, including Monday 7 June. Leave gaps between bookings; three days can become surprisingly busy on paper.

Garden fan? Bord Bia Bloom in the Phoenix Park has been held over the June bank holiday weekend, with the 2026 festival running from Thursday 28 May to Monday 1 June. The 2027 dates hadn’t been announced when we checked in October 2026, so confirm them with Bord Bia before you book around it.

A Family Day Out With One Main Destination

For families, one main attraction and an easy meal stop can be enough. No need to turn it into an endurance event. Choose somewhere that matches the children’s interests and leaves you with a manageable journey home.

The Birr Castle Gardens and Science Centre visitor guide is a useful starting point for a garden and science-focused outing. Before booking, check the venue’s arrangements for your date, along with accessibility, toilets, food options and any age or height restrictions relevant to your activities.

Leaving the car at home? Several day trips from Dublin by train fit into a single day. Check the timetable for Monday 7 June itself, as services can differ on a public holiday.

June Bank Holiday Booking Checklist

June bank holiday 2027 Ireland booking checklist: time off, accommodation totals, event dates, attraction access, transport and a weather alternative.
  • Confirm your time off: establish whether Monday 7 June is a day off for you before booking travel.
  • Compare accommodation totals: check availability, minimum stays, cancellation terms, parking and breakfast charges.
  • Check events with the organizer: use a listing that explicitly names the 2027 date. A previous year’s festival page isn’t a booking plan.
  • Confirm attraction access: check holiday opening arrangements, timed entry, accessible routes and which parts of the site your ticket includes.
  • Check both transport journeys: consult the official operator for your outward and return dates, including the last service and any service notices.
  • Keep a weather alternative: choose an indoor option close enough to use without rebuilding the whole day.

A day trip makes sense if it gives you enough time for the activity you actually want. Stay overnight when the journey would otherwise dominate the day, or when an evening out is part of the reason for going. Either way, compare the full cost before deciding.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Republic’s June Bank Holiday Apply in Northern Ireland?

No. The Republic of Ireland’s public holiday designation doesn’t apply across the border. Northern Ireland has a separate bank and public holiday calendar; use that calendar and your employment arrangements when planning time off there. There’s no June bank holiday in Northern Ireland in 2027: its Spring bank holiday falls a week earlier, on Monday 31 May, and our Northern Ireland bank holidays 2027 guide has the full list.

Does the June Bank Holiday Mean Schools Have a Longer Break?

Check your child’s school calendar before booking extra weekdays around Monday 7 June 2027. Our guide to school holidays in Ireland helps you compare the wider breaks, but the public holiday date alone doesn’t establish a longer school break or the school’s summer finishing date.

Can I Turn the Weekend Into a Four-Day Break?

If Saturday, Sunday and the holiday Monday are already days off for you, approved annual leave on Friday 4 June or Tuesday 8 June 2027 would give you four consecutive days off. Take both and you’ve got five, Friday 4 to Tuesday 8 June. Confirm leave approval before paying for the extra night.

When Are the Bank Holidays Either Side of June 2027?

The one before is the May bank holiday on Monday 3 May 2027, five weeks earlier. The next is the August bank holiday on Monday 2 August 2027, eight weeks after the June weekend.
