A low daily rate is a useful starting point when comparing Madeira Airport car hire. The next step is checking what the booking includes, how much money you need available at collection and what you could owe if the car is damaged.
For a Madeira holiday, the right rental also needs to suit steep roads, your luggage and your arrival time. Spending a few minutes comparing the details can prevent a much longer conversation at the collection desk.
If you plan to spend several days exploring the island, collecting a car at the airport can be convenient. If most of your stay will be in central Funchal, compare that arrangement with hiring a car only for selected outings.
Already booked a package? Check whether transfers or excursions are included before paying for overlapping transport. Our guide to all-inclusive holiday planning explains the inclusions worth checking.

Search using identical collection and return times, driver details, transmission and passenger requirements. Otherwise, apparently similar quotes may cover different arrangements.
| Booking detail | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| Total price | Taxes, applicable location fees and all selected extras. |
| Security deposit | The amount, whether it is blocked or charged, and release arrangements. |
| Payment card | Accepted card types, main-driver name requirements and available funds. |
| Damage and theft protection | Excesses, exclusions and whether protection reduces charges or reimburses them later. |
| Fuel and mileage | The return fuel level, refuelling charges and any mileage limit. |
| Collection and return | Terminal desk, shuttle or meeting point, opening hours and late-arrival terms. |
| Changes and cancellation | Deadlines, charges and what happens if your flight is delayed. |
When browsing the Madeira Airport rental cars listed by RosCar Madeira, apply this checklist to the individual offer. The website advertises options involving no security deposit and alternative payment methods, but confirm the supplying rental company and the conditions attached to your chosen booking.
Multiply the daily rate by the rental period, then add any selected extras not already included. Check whether your collection and return times create another chargeable rental day.
The following illustrative figures show how the calculation works for a seven-day rental. They are examples rather than current advertised offers.
| Cost or condition | Offer A | Offer B |
|---|---|---|
| Daily rental rate | €22 | €26 |
| Seven-day base price | €154 | €182 |
| Selected extras | €56 | Included |
| Total rental cost | €210 | €182 |
| Security deposit, separate from rental cost | €800 | €0 |
| Damage excess for covered claims | €1,000 | €1,000 |
Offer B costs €28 less overall despite its higher daily rate. However, both examples retain the same damage excess. Removing a security deposit changes the money needed at collection without necessarily changing your responsibility for damage.
A security deposit and an insurance excess are different things. The deposit is money held or collected as security. The excess is the amount you may have to pay towards a covered damage or theft claim, subject to the agreement.
A booking prepayment is different again: it is part of the rental price paid in advance.
Confirm whether the supplier accepts your specific debit or credit card, whether a physical card is required and whose name must appear on it. Being able to pay online with a debit card does not automatically establish that it is accepted for the security deposit.
Ask when the supplier releases a hold or issues a refund. Your bank’s processing time may affect when the money becomes available.

Compulsory third-party insurance covers liability towards other people and their property. It does not provide the same protection as cover for damage to the rental vehicle.
Check the collision and theft terms separately. Ask about glass, tyres, wheels, the underbody, keys, recovery charges and any restrictions on roads or vehicle use.
There is also an important difference between these arrangements:
The CCPC’s car rental guidance explains this reimbursement distinction. Separate cover does not automatically remove the supplier’s deposit requirement.
Labels such as “full coverage” need supporting terms. Check exclusions, claim limits and required paperwork before deciding what suits your trip.
A compact car can be convenient on narrow roads and in smaller parking spaces. However, check luggage capacity and how the proposed vehicle suits your passenger load and planned routes. Engine capacity alone does not explain its performance on hills.
Choose a transmission you are comfortable using. If you want an automatic, confirm that the booking guarantees that category.
The luggage checks in our rental-car packing guide for Ireland apply here too: check how your actual bags will fit before choosing the smallest category.
Visit Madeira’s road guidance recommends lower gears on descents and warns that navigation apps may suggest impractical routes. Follow road signs and ask your accommodation about awkward final approaches.
Madeira Airport has rental desks in Arrivals, while other arrangements may involve a shuttle or meeting point. Confirm your supplier’s exact instructions rather than assuming every airport booking has a terminal desk.
Give the company your flight number and ask about delays, closing times and out-of-hours charges. Allow time for inspection and any shuttle when returning the car.
Keep confirmations and contact numbers available offline. Our Ireland phone and connectivity checklist includes useful document and charging checks; adapt the roaming and plug arrangements for Portugal.
For a full-to-full fuel policy, identify a suitable refuelling stop before returning and keep the receipt. Request a return inspection where available and retain the final paperwork.
Selected offers advertise this option. Confirm the conditions and any remaining excess or exclusions. No deposit does not mean no liability.
Some suppliers offer alternatives. Get confirmation for your particular booking, including the payment method accepted at collection.
Visit Madeira confirms that its expressways and main roads are toll-free. Parking charges and rental-company fees are separate costs.
Official tourism guidance gives an approximate road journey of 20 to 25 minutes. Allow additional time for collection, traffic and reaching your exact accommodation.
Choose the offer whose price, payment requirements, protection and vehicle fit your holiday. A clear agreement is worth more than a daily rate that leaves important questions unanswered.
