For a town-centre trip from Dublin to Athlone, the train from Dublin Heuston is usually the simplest starting point. Compare a direct coach if you are arriving at Dublin Airport, and consider driving if your plans include rural stops or accommodation outside town.
The useful comparison is door to door: getting to the departure point, travelling to Athlone and reaching your first stop. A cheap ticket is less of a bargain if it introduces a taxi you had not budgeted for.
Castle update, checked 12 October 2026: Athlone Castle’s visitor centre is closed for redevelopment. Its latest official homepage notice says reopening is likely to extend into 2027, with the 2027 tourist season the aim. Do not book a day trip around an interior visit until reopening is confirmed.
| Option | Route and arrival | Best fit |
|---|---|---|
| Train | Dublin Heuston to Athlone railway station, on the east side of the centre | Sightseeing near the Shannon without parking |
| Coach | Citylink services from Dublin city or airport; Athlone stops vary by route | Airport arrivals or a convenient city pickup |
| Car | Main route via the M4 and M6 to your chosen parking space | Groups, rural activities or luggage-heavy stays |
For a rough sense of scale, Athlone’s official destination transport guide gives a rail journey of around 1 hour 20 minutes from Heuston. That is orientation, not the duration of every departure: use Irish Rail’s journey planner for your exact outbound and return trains.
For coaches, use the selected service’s scheduled times rather than copying the train estimate. For a drive from central Dublin, setting aside about two hours is a useful initial planning allowance; traffic, your starting address and parking can make it longer. Check live navigation before leaving.

Search for Dublin Heuston to Athlone, not Dublin Connolly. Athlone is served on the Galway and Westport routes. Choose a journey shown as direct if you want to avoid a transfer, then note the arrival time and fare conditions.
Heuston is west of the main central shopping and sightseeing area. If you are staying near Trinity College, Temple Bar or the Docklands, include the journey to the station when comparing options. A convenient train still needs a convenient way to reach it.
Athlone railway station is on the eastern side of the town centre. You can walk towards the shopping streets and River Shannon, then cross the town bridge for the castle area on the west bank. Map your hotel or first activity before booking, especially with luggage.
Use Irish Rail’s Athlone station information and assistance arrangements if you need help boarding or step-free access. Check both ends of the journey, rather than assuming the destination station settles the whole question.
Pick the return while choosing the outbound. Compare the complete return fare, flexibility, refund terms, reservation arrangements and the ticket-collection instructions in your confirmation.
Check when you will reach Heuston and how you will get back to your accommodation. For an evening event, leave time after the advertised finish for getting to the station. A ticket to the show does not solve the journey home.
Citylink’s 763 multi-stop Galway–Dublin City–Dublin Airport route is one service to compare. Its official timetable directory lists Athlone among the stops. Citylink also lists other routes serving Athlone, so search the exact journey rather than assuming every Galway-bound coach calls there.
The 763 timetable lists B&Q at Arcadia Retail Centre as an Athlone stop. Other services can use different stops, including the TUS area. These are not interchangeable with Athlone railway station. Check the map and any onward bus, walk or taxi before buying.
The Transport for Ireland journey planner helps compare connections. Confirm service details and conditions with the operator before paying.
Dublin Airport has no railway station. Rail travel to Athlone therefore needs a separate transfer to Heuston. A Citylink airport service serving your Athlone stop can avoid that extra leg.
Compare direct coach availability first, then compare the combined airport-to-Heuston transfer and train if the coach timings or stop do not work for you. Include both tickets and the waiting time between them.
Allow time after landing for border formalities, baggage and reaching the coach boarding area. Follow the operator’s terminal and stop instructions. The aircraft’s arrival time is a poor starting point for a tight onward booking.
Our guide to Dublin Airport’s two terminals explains the airport layout distinction. Check your own flight and coach details separately.
The usual motorway route uses the M4 and M6. An airport start may also involve the M50; whether you cross its toll point depends on the route. Check navigation using your actual pickup and destination addresses.
Transport Infrastructure Ireland lists the 2026 M4 Kilcock–Enfield–Kinnegad toll at €3.60 for a passenger car per crossing. A return over that toll section is €7.20 before fuel, parking or any other charges. Recheck the rate for later years.
The Galway–Ballinasloe toll is west of Athlone and is not part of the standard journey ending in Athlone. An M50 approach can add a separate barrier-free toll. If you hire a car, ask how the rental company processes tolls and any administration fees.
Choose a car park near your first stop and check payment, maximum stay and closing arrangements. For central sightseeing, leave the car in one place. Driving earns its keep more readily when your day includes rural activities than when it consists of lunch beside the Shannon.
Yes, if you want a compact riverside town visit and choose activities available on your date. Aim for around five or six hours in town for lunch, a walk and a cultural stop. That is a sightseeing allowance, not a transport timetable.

While Athlone Castle’s visitor centre is closed, see the exterior only from areas open to the public and respect redevelopment barriers. Our Athlone Castle history and location guide provides background, but the operator’s latest closure notice takes priority over older reopening estimates.
If the castle interior is your main reason to travel, postpone that particular plan until the reopening is confirmed. If you want an evening meal, entertainment or countryside stops, an overnight gives you more room than watching the clock through dinner.

For a short stay in the capital, compare the time this trip takes with our three-day Dublin itinerary. Athlone is a choice for a spare day, not an essential detour for every first visit.
Dublin Heuston. Search Heuston to Athlone in Irish Rail’s journey planner and choose a direct departure if that is your preference.
Yes. Compare a direct coach serving the airport and your Athlone stop. Alternatively, transfer to Heuston and take the train, allowing for the extra connection.
No. Prices depend on your date, fare conditions and local transfers. Compare the total return cost for train and coach, not just the advertised one-way fare.
Yes, if suitable separate journeys are available. Map both Athlone stops, because the coach pickup may be somewhere different from the railway station.
