What the Latest CSO Services Data Shows

The headline figures point to strong growth in Ireland’s services sector, but the breakdown shows that much of the increase was concentrated in Information & Communication. That sector recorded a 23.7% annual increase in value and a 20.0% increase in volume.

The difference becomes clearer when Information & Communication is removed. The CSO’s modified services index showed annual value growth of just 2.3% without the sector, compared with 15.4% for services overall. Volume excluding Information & Communication increased by only 0.1%.

Not Every Industry Was Growing

Transportation & Storage also performed strongly, with value up 10.2% from a year earlier. Professional, Scientific & Technical Activities recorded an 8.9% rise in value and a larger 12.4% increase in volume.

At the other end of the table, Administrative & Support Services recorded the largest annual decline, with value down 14.6% and volume down 25.5%. Other Service Activities also declined, while Accommodation & Food Services was broadly unchanged.

What Do Value and Volume Mean?

The CSO uses value to measure turnover generated by service businesses. Volume adjusts those figures to remove the effect of changing prices, providing a clearer indication of how the underlying level of activity has changed.

This means the 15.4% headline figure should be understood as growth in the value of services turnover, rather than a 15.4% increase in the Irish economy as a whole.
